Away game: deep water, foreign discipline (1st) - Norbert Kiss starts the Mecsek Rallye!
Two excellent track racers also pay their respects in the field - more precisely in front of him. The names of Norbert Kiss and Gábor Wéber are respected by all motorsport fans, they are excellent drivers and sportsmen, and they have already proven their talent in several cup series. The professional head of the competition, Tibor Markó, built on their two-decade acquaintance, approached the two star drivers with a special idea: what if they tried themselves in another discipline, tasting the beauties of rally sports. Also on the asphalt, but beyond the fence of the built tracks, in a new, unknown, but exciting terrain for them. "Running to the finish line" in front of the field, fully experiencing the competitive atmosphere, yet in an environment without the pressure of an opponent or a stopwatch! And if you're going to be a goose, be fat! Thanks to another friendly relationship, Gábor Jagadics, and because GR Motorsport was receptive to the idea and helped make it a reality, this time they can turn the wheel of a slightly angry Toyota Yaris GR; as a rally warm-up, for now unfortunately "only" as a control car pilot - but who knows what the sequel will bring...
First, like Gábor Wéber, he once spread his wings in the Astra Cup, later fought big battles with him in the domestic Renault Clio Cup, then won the domestic SEAT León Cup just before that, later won a race in the Spanish SEAT León Super Cup, and finally on the Kamino We asked Norbert Kiss, who won the championship trophy four times at the European Championship with several brands, and was chosen as the Car Racer of the Year in Hungary in 2020, what this trip to Meszcz means to him. At the time of writing these lines, he was still just before the series Hungaroring race, so in his spirit he was tuned to a "slightly" bigger car, but he was already winking at Pécs with half an eye.
"Although I've never been able to try it before, I've always been interested in the world of rallying, I watched its events from afar, so I was very happy when Markó Tibi approached me with this interesting opportunity," he immediately flashed another similarity with his former great rival, in addition to what was mentioned in the introduction. With Gábor Wéber, who also declared himself a "secret Ralifan".
"As a warm-up, the Toyota Yaris GR made available to us thanks to Gábor Jagadics promises to be a perfect little racing machine with its 270 horsepower, in any case, it's more than enough for "control driving", since there's no question of a real race this time, right; well, of course I'd like to beat Gábor" - he justifies that his blood doesn't turn to water on a race track and in a car because he doesn't have an official start number painted on his side.
"By the way, I've already had the pleasure of trying this Yaris GR, on public roads and on a closed track at an airport in slightly more "free" conditions, I really liked it, it's small, agile, sporty, it will be an excellent companion, it will be able to really live here. I'm happy that we can now be friends with him for a whole long weekend," he lists the good features of the car.
"Yes, no matter how much I wait, I have questions, of course, because I have never prepared a rally itinerary in my life, and a navigator has never dictated the pace, but I am sure that Lajos Juszku and I will tune into each other very quickly. On the other hand, although I am used to being able to quickly learn by heart on the track, the rally is completely different with its hundreds of kilometers and orders of magnitude more combinations of turns and obstacles, so the pre-written itinerary is obviously necessary and a great help to the driver here. I've done a lot of rallying in the simulator, and the machine offers help there too, I'll be curious to see how it all works in real life. All in all, I am preparing for a real driving experience, I hope that a lot of spectators will visit the serpentines in Meszcz and, like the competitors, will be enriched with beautiful experiences at this well-deserved and well-known race!"
