Previous winners of the Mecsek Rallye (3rd) Norbert Herczig: "We won the championship here for the fourth time!"
"The Mecsek Rallye is the top of my heart in the Hungarian championship. I started here most often, more than 20 times. I can probably say that I know quite a few blades of grass in the area. In 2017, we won the championship for the fourth time in this competition. This was the penultimate race and we secured the title here. When I was on my way home, I remember how I stopped at Pécsvárad and looked back at the hills of Mecsek, it was very touching, because it was my farewell to the Hungarian championship," says the three-time winner of the race (2012, 2014, 2017) looking back on his successful time in Pécs.
"The other, which is also an emotional issue and must be mentioned, István Jelen person, whose name has merged with the Mecsek Rallye. In 2010, when he dreamed of creating an international race, I remember how much energy he put into it, we even worked together on this. He made a huge sacrifice for this, yet it did not end well for him. But he didn't give up on his dream and in 2011 he organized the first IRC race, where big names also started who went on to excel at the World Cup. I'm sorry that you can no longer be with us!" - Norbert Herczig pays tribute to the memory of the director who worked extremely hard for the competition.
"After the Hungarian championship, we have been participating in the ERC for the fourth year now, and from this year we are competing in the team of an Indian tire manufacturer, Team MRF Tires. On the one hand, this is a huge opportunity and a great honor to be selected for this team. On the other hand, it also put us in a difficult situation, because we had to face unexpected events that had not happened in our previous career. For example, there are team instructions and different tactics, so we can't necessarily follow our own ideas, and we don't always have the right knowledge about the tires we use, so it happens that we don't make the right choice, which is also reflected in our results. So I have to say - beyond the waist of the championship - this year is spent getting used to these tires. We had mistakes, I can call them administrative mistakes, which also set us back, so we are not where we wanted to be, not even close to it. But we don't give up, that's the sport. We're not in such good shape now, but we're moving on."
