This has never happened before
The weather badly interfered with the successful conduct of the 56th Mecsek Rallye, as far as the first day's program is concerned.
The forecasts had already predicted that in addition to the terrible heat, rain could also be expected, so even just because of the correct choice of tires, it was a topic among the competitors, what will happen if it rains. In the morning, everyone was still complaining about the heat, and it was not possible to know for sure whether the storm would really overtake Mecsek.
However, after the first round, during the ceremonial start ceremony at Széchenyi Square, while the racing cars were passing the podium, the organizers finally decided to interrupt the program due to the coming storm, which promised to be serious, for the sake of the safety of the competitors and the spectators. Thus, the competitors were informed of the change of plan before they could complete the last three stages. This was the end of the first day's struggle for them and all that was left was to get the racing cars to safety as soon as possible.
On the first day of the 56th Mecsek Rallye, Friday, a total of 184 pairs started in three different categories. Among them, supply, mainly featuring Ladas, R3-as field started the program on perhaps the hottest day of the year, on the Mandulás-Árpádtetto section. The 35 pairs competing in this category only had to test their skills on Saturday, on a total of five stages, but in the end they were only able to complete three courses. Due to the car hitting the strip barrier in the first lap, it was not safe to start again due to the coating on the road, so the field passed through it in stages.
The last section, between Komló and Hosszúhetény, could not be held due to weather conditions. Thus, at the end of the short day, the duo Ákos Lenkey - Cintia Drótos won the overall, followed by the duo Zsolt Korom - József Kovács in second place. The third best was Richard Békési and his navigator Zsolt Bernát Martin.
After the R3 team, the field of special, old techniques, a Historic category followed, which is a real treat for fans, with legendary cars, many returning foreign drivers and, of course, well-known domestic drivers.
Enduring the incredible heat was much more of a challenge for the competitors than completing the courses.
In the international evaluation, after the first three stages, the Érdi's lead the table ahead of the Italian "Lucky", Karl Wagner and Michael Putz.
“Lucky” – Fabrizia Pons (Lancia Delta HF Integrale):
This is a very special race. The heat makes our work very difficult, not only physically, but also technically. It's very good, there are long stages, it's a very cool race.
Karl Wagner – Gerda Zauner (Porsche 911 SC):
It is very hot and humid. Their speeds are very good, I really like them, but the change in weather can make the next laps more difficult for us. But we are aware that this rally!
Michael Putz – Elisabeth Putz (Porsche 911 SC):
It is very fast and slippery in some places. but for now we are pushing and we are already fourth, so we will continue like this.
Last year's winner Tibor Érdi jr. is again among the domestic "Historics". and István Kerék completed the distance the fastest, then Ferenc Wirtmann and József Kerekes ran in second. Dávid Nagy - János Nagy will be able to start Saturday from the third place.
ifj Érdi Tibor – Ford Sierra
So far we have driven eighteen kilometers with a good car and a little more with a bad car. Our semi-axle broke in the Lapis U-turn and that's how we went through Alsómocsolád. Fortunately, the guys at the service station in Komló replaced it, which is already happening very quickly, since we replace it a lot. At the moment we are leading with ten, from here we try to go as evenly as possible. The car gets terribly hot in this heat, you have to be very careful with the car, because the old girl is quite hysterical anyway!
Wirtmann Ferenc – Ford Escort
So far, it looks like there is nothing wrong with the result. We lead the Hungarian championship rating, although we did not enter the EC, but we would be good for fourth or fifth place there in absolute terms. So far, it looks like the car is working well, although I was only able to sit in it after a repair just now, here at the competition. So we're making good progress, it's just the heat for the little one.
Kalapács József – OPEL Ascona
The atmosphere in the car is very good despite the tremendous heat, which is very tiring. The tracks are very good, the car is good, although the opponents are very strong, they are very fast, but now we can move on from fifth or sixth place, we are trying to give everything we can!
Spindler Jenő – OPEL Kadett GSi
My favorite brand is always constant, although I'm crying right now about R2, it's really weak right now. Presumably there might be a fuel problem in the high heat. We lack strength in the upper half, we get a lot, but where I have local knowledge, we are fast.
Csukovics István – LADA 2101
The beginning was a bit difficult. It should be known that we did not test between two races, we just put the car down and then take it out at the next one. Then it always starts with a little groping, but we get to the end. I hope it will be the same now!
It is on the first day's courses ORB field passed last. Boutórek performed the best, followed by Velenczei and Vincze, followed by Turán and Ranga.
Ferenc Vincze
It's very hot in the car, it can be 60 degrees! We are going with a different rubber compound, hard, not like Salgón. I think the car is not yet adjusted to the maximum, we need to modify this a little, or we need to put the other mixture back.
Bútor Róbert:
Everything is in its place! We started quite well on the first, the narrow part of the second was no longer for me, we were more careful there, but in the wide we recovered from the many disadvantages we had in the narrow. The third went better than I expected. The car is perfect, everything is going according to plan. There is no risk, we enjoy racing, we "color" wherever we have to, wherever there are people!
Ranga Péter:
It was a bit chaotic, because I have not driven with this compound tire before. Everyone complains about the lack of grip, but maybe that's because of the high heat. I'm trying to get used to it and speed up, because we're only fourth or fifth.
On Saturday, the Mecsek Rally will continue as originally planned. Competitors will complete three more courses, twice. The ranks of the categories will be joined on this day by pairs from R2. The first car starts at Árpádtetto, at 8:33 a.m. from the EHRC field.
