Historic four-wheelers: Double car exhibition on Széchenyi Square

This year, the Mecsek Rallye is not just a race of drivers and cars against time, for championship points, or a spectacular race on the country roads of the county. The organizers also thought of those - even families - who are attracted to the special cars, but are not fanatical rally fans enough to spend the day waiting for the field to race by one of the corners in Mecsek.

In addition to the Friday afternoon start and Saturday evening finish ceremonies on Széchenyi Square, they may also be interested in the downtown parc fermé on Friday night and, as an additional program, two different car exhibition parades operating as an open-air car museum.

The Zwei Takt Memory project can be mentioned as a memory recalling the everyday streetscape and rally tracks of the bygone socialism, during which nine contemporary Gruppe A, i.e. the real two-stroke racing Trabant of the time, will be driven around Széchenyi Square on Friday. All really trained on the tracks, mainly in the rally sprint championship, and then renewed and reduced after years of rest in the garage, evoking fond memories for the elderly, and as a technical marvel for the young.

However, after the parade at Széchenyi Square, the Trabi will still be at the end of the field and will be pushing through the two Fridays and then all the following days. Let's add that, even though they are genuine former racing machines with factory homologated tuning, Gruppe A, this time they are not at a breakneck speed, but only at a demonstration pace.

The field of 26 cars of the 550-kilometer Ypres-Istanbul Challenge, including real curiosities between 1926 and 1978, Aston Martin, Bentley, Citroen CV2, We can admire Porsches, classic Mercs and several cars saved from the pre-war era. The youngest car in the lineup will be a 1978 VW Beetle.

The presence of the field from Belgium to Turkey is primarily due to the event's director, Fred Gallagher (who, by the way, won 5 World Rally Championship races during his career as a navigator), who, knowing the time of the Mecsek Rallye and using his good connections in Pécs, approached the organizers in search of a possible connection.

They will also take part in the official test on Thursday, then on Friday morning they will complete a regularity stage on the Trefortpuszta speedway, even in traffic before the track is closed.

It is also interesting that the honorary president of the organization Rally the Globe, which organizes their tour, is Ari Vatanen.
