Interview with Ferenc Wirtmann:
Last year was the 50th anniversary of my first start at the Mecsek Rallye, and this year is the anniversary of my 70th birthday. However, I still really, really love Mecsek and its tracks, it's absolutely like coming home, it's my favorite race. Anyway, overall, this year will be my thirty-seventh-eighth Mecsek Rallye, because I had a few years off, but we prepare for every race just as conscientiously by preparing the car, going around the track and everything else. Itineraries must always be updated, as each course changes a lot after a road renovation. Obviously, they allow higher quality, wider and therefore much faster speeds. This is partly an advantage, but also a disadvantage. It's an advantage because with the Escort, we ride with rather small, 13" wheels, which cut much better on poor quality roads with broken potholes, and the risk of punctures is also much higher. The disadvantage is that opponents with stronger four-wheel drive are capable of much higher speeds, and it is more difficult to keep up with them.
Not in the EB field, we will only participate in the Hungarian evaluation, but of course we will look at the EB times, even if we will start after them. I hope there will be a large field! I will especially pay special attention to the Escort opponents, as we have not yet found a winner among the brand partners in our country. It would be exciting if the Spanish Escort guy, Jesus Ferrero, who is often in the absolute top five at the EC, would start. I watch his time in every race, it would be great to compete with him on home track!
