Mads Ostberg and Zippo won the 54th Mecsek Rallye
The WRC2 world champion Mads Ostberg and Torstein Eriksen won the Rally1 evaluation of the 54th Mecsek Rallye with their Citroen C3 Rally2. Behind the Norwegian duo, András Hadik - Krisztián Kertész, competing with a Ford Fiesta, finished in second place with a 33.6 second gap, the Polish duo Grzegorz Grzyb - Kamil Kozdron, starting with a Skoda Fabia, came third, they finished 38.2 seconds behind the winning Ostbergs. In the Histric European Championship, the Zippo-Dennis Piceno duo won with Audi.
Mads Ostberg won five of the ten fastest times in the Rally1 field, who took a start-to-finish victory, as he already led the race after the first stage on Friday evening, and kept an eye on the victory to ensure that it was not in danger.
„We really enjoyed the race, we were able to go on cool speed sections, we thank the director for the weekend, it was good! We fought serious battles, and we congratulate the Hungarian competitors because they set a serious pace” – declared the winner on the podium set up on Széchenyi Square.
At the finish line of the last sprint of the competition, the couple Róbert Bútor-Róbert Tagai was still in second place, but they handed in their ticket before the finishing podium. They already decided to do this before the race, since they started the Mecsek Rallye with a Citroen C3 WRC, which is so much better technology than the other drivers, that they did not want to have a say in the development of the Hungarian championship in a sporting manner. They started a rally with the car for the first time, and the familiarization went so well that they won four speed stages on Saturday.
"We got through a good race, but our tire tactics didn't work. We wanted to get a little closer to Ostberg, but we couldn't. We congratulate them on their victory!” András Hadik said on the podium. While chasing the Ostbergs, they fought a huge battle with Grzyb, who had overtaken them at the beginning of the Saturday, but the Hadikés turned around in the ninth speed and secured their second place in the last stage.
The ninth stage did not bring luck to Frigyes Turán and László Bagaméri. They were in fifth place when they tried to overtake one place, but they slid off the road and badly crushed the Volkswagen Polo.
In the RC4 category, two couples from Baranya fought an enjoyable battle over six speeds. The victory of László Ranga Jr. and Annamária Budai was finally decided on the seventh stage, when Gergő Szauer and László Rácz made a mistake, their car also had a small technical problem, and they lost more than a minute in total. Gábor Német and Tamás Szőke finished third in the category, they also competed with a Peugeot 208 Rally4.
It started out of competition, but Péter Ranga and Ernő Büki gave the audience unforgettable moments. In memory of the six-time Hungarian László Ranga, they completed the stages of the Mecsek Rallye with a Subaru Impreza painted to match the period.
The best of the ORC category went to Attila Rongits - Hannus László, who started with Mitsubishi, and the international Mitropa Cup evaluation was won by the German duo Manuel Kössler - Melanie Kalinke.
In addition to modern cars, vintage racing cars also competed at the Mecsek Rallye. The winner of the FIA Historic European Championship was Zippo – Denis Piceno. The Italian duo racing in an Audi Quattro performed similarly to the Ostbergs, taking the lead in the first gear and staying there for all eleven stages. They won six stages, and their victory was only in jeopardy when they came to the service center after the fifth stage with a loose shift lever. The team corrected the mistake, so Zippo's - whose real name is Andrea Zivian - confidently won the race.
"The competition was incredible, I loved it! I really liked today's first speed section, but also the other tracks, this place is beautiful. The competition was very well organized, we thank the organizers for the opportunity. Thanks for the support to my team and navigator who have a lot of work to do this weekend” said Zippo.
Austria's Karl Wagner and Gerda Zauner took second place in the Historic European Championship. They finished 1 minute 41.6 seconds behind in their yellow Porsche. An Italian duo finished third, Lucio Da Zanche and Matteo Nobili also racing with Porsche.
The best Hungarian pair of the Historic European Championships were László Mekler and Edit Mekler.Miko, they finished in absolute seventh place and second in their category.
In the Historic Hungarian championship, Ferenc Wirtmann and József Kerekes won by more than 4 minutes ahead of Zsolt Kalapács and Kornél Kalapács.
